There are two versions of this book: one for guitar and one for ukulele. This one's for ukulele. If you are just strumming the chords (and you know your chords,) it doesn't really matter which book you get, but if you need reminders about where to put your fingers on the frets while you're playing the chords buy this one. It includes a chord diagram above every chord in every song which makes it much easier to learn the songs.Several reviews write that this book is too advanced for them, but there is a good variety of levels among the songs:BeginningNa Ka Pueo (C, F, & G7), Keyhole Hula (Kauhoa Mai) (G, C, D7), 'Ulili E (C, F, G7 with an extra note on the F that can be left off and a C5 that can be played as a simple C if desired)Intermediate (Each song has the basic chords with a couple of new chords added in to give it a richer sound. These range from super-easy chords like Gsus or G9, or more advanced chords like Bbmaj7 and Bbm)Over The Rainbow - What A Wonderful World Medley, White Sandy Beach, Panini Puakea, He Hawai'i Au, Hawaii 78, Hawaiian Like Me, 'Ama 'Ama, Ka Kua U'i, Kuhio BayAdvanced (Each song has a mostly more advanced chords that change quickly)Hene Kou 'Aka, Ka Huila Wai, Wind Beneath My WingsThe bottom line for most people looking at this book is whether they can play Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World and White Sandy Beach: On Over The Rainbow there's a G/B, but a plain old G sounds almost the same, there's a C played as a barre chord on the third fret, but a regular C works, there's an Am7 & an Em7, but in both cases plain Am & Em can be played. If you've been playing for a little while you should be able to play this song in a basic way. If you give yourself a little time to learn the Hawaiian strum that IZ uses on the CD, you can sound great on this song in a relatively short time. White Sandy Beach, on the other hand, has BbMaj7, Bbm & Bbm6 chords that cannot be omitted or substituted with more basic chords. They are barre chords, but they are not super-difficult and can be mastered with a little persistence. If you really want to "up" your game learn the fingerpicking pattern - it may take a few weeks of dedicated practice, but it's SO worth it!If you are a real beginner you could start with the easier songs and work your way up to the more advanced ones.All of these songs can be played with just the chords, but this book includes tabbed transcriptions for the exact fingerpicking that is played on the record by IZ. If you are branching out into fingerpicking it's a good way to challenge yourself, and remember that fingerpicking requires muscle memory, so keep at it until your fingers can play it without your brain thinking about it (my Dad used to have me walk around the yard or carry on a conversation with him while practicing my fingerpicking.) If you are an experienced fingerpicker you can see IZ's patterns and quickly incorporate them into your playing for a genuine Hawaiian sound.I've been playing music my entire life and in my experience it is really rare to find a book that is this accurate to what the artist plays on the recording. Everything is in the right key and the chords are all correct so you can play along with the CD and really get the feel for Hawaiian music as it is played here in the Islands. If you are newer to playing you might want to get a "Slow Downer" music app for your tablet or phone. This lets you play any songs that you have downloaded onto your device at a much slower tempo (but at the right pitch) while you are learning the trickier parts. Very helpful.I write reviews as a hobby for fun and it always makes my day when I find out that my reviews have helped someone, so leave a comment if you'd like, feel free to ask a question, or just say "Hi." Full disclosure: I did not buy this book, I checked it out of the library :DOne more tip for beginners: don't give up! If the song feels difficult when you try to play it, just keep at it a little everyday. You'll be amazed when one day you realize that you are playing it perfectly. Every time you challenge yourself with a song in this way your skill level increases exponentially. This is one of those rare music books that gives you the chance to really grow.
What a beautifully produced book. For all the pieces that I have learned to play, the chord charts are accurate. Although I will never NEVER match the amazing Ukulele skills and magnificent voice of IZ, I am having a great deal of fun learning many of the songs and entertaining my friends and family.IZ. You are greatly missed.
Product exactly as described... Very useful... Keep in mind that this book is geared more towards intermediate to advanced ukulele players... It's a great book once a person has mastered the ukulele a bit... All in all it's a great product.
So far, I'm just using this book to strum chords for some of the songs I like, and they are beautiful. The book also indicates how to pick individual notes if you want to come closer to the sound of the original recordings. One added benefit alternate fingerings for some chords. For example, the fingering for B7 is much easier than the one I'd been using.
Nice selection of songs, music and lyrics. I agree with another reviewer, it is mostly too advanced for my 'Ukulele skills, I've been playing just over a year. But I like the book, I attempt to play what I can, and look forward to one day being able to play it all. :)
I am new to Uke, but this book wasn't to hard to read. The only thing that is hard to do is some of the strum patterns are hard to determine. I love this book because most of the songs included are my favorite.
However, it came with the top right corner folded back and damaged in shipping. As it is a birthday gift for my daughter in Hawaii, I am disappointed.
Would love tabular, but this is a good book.
